October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month

In an effort to promote knowledge and awareness about medical ultrasound and promote its value in healthcare, Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month helps familiarize and educate us all about this specialty and its increasing role in medicine.

What is diagnostic medical ultrasound?

Diagnostic medical ultrasound is a procedure that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic images of organs, tissues or blood flow inside the body. It is used to examine many parts of the body, such as the abdomen, breast, reproductive system, heart and blood vessels. Ultrasound is increasingly being used to detect heart and vascular diseases, as well as detect injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments. Unlike many imaging procedures, ultrasound does not use x-rays.

Ultrasound exams use a transducer that works like a loudspeaker and microphone because it transmits and receives sound. The transducer sends a stream of high frequency sound waves into the body and detects their echoes as they bounce off internal structures. Different structures in the body reflect these sound waves differently. A computer translates this information to generate images of the structures on a computer monitor.

Several different ultrasounds examine different areas of the body, including:

  • Hysterosonography (uterus)
  • Obstetric ultrasound
  • Abdomen
  • Breast
  • Carotid
  • General
  • Musculo-skeletal
  • Pelvis
  • Prostate
  • Scrotum
  • Thyroid
  • Vascular
  • Venous (extremities)
  • Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy

In honor of Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, we recognize the outstanding work and level of competency that our own ultrasound and echo technologists do, including:

  • Carrie Day
  • Angel Gomez
  • Carie Howard
  • Valerie Mann
  • Elizabeth Mertens
