Trios Health Joins Washington State Blue Band Initiative to Help Keep Patients, Babies Safe from Preeclampsia Risk
May 2, 2025

Trios Health has joined the statewide Blue Band Initiative to reduce a patient’s risk of developing a serious and potentially life-threatening condition known as preeclampsia—or persistent high blood pressure/hypertension—during pregnancy.
Preeclampsia is a multi-system progressive disorder that can occur any time during pregnancy and up to six weeks after delivery. It is characterized by hypertension and evidence of organ injury. As many as one in twelve pregnancies are affected by pre-eclampsia.
To help alert healthcare providers about a patient’s risk for this condition, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) began its Blue Band Initiative. Trios Health has begun issuing blue wristbands to higher-risk patients, encouraging them to wear it during pregnancy and after their delivery.
“As healthcare professionals, our primary commitment is to ensure the safety and well-being of every patient under our care. The implementation of the Washington Blue Band Initiative represents a vital step in enhancing patient safety through a standardized approach to identifying and preventing potential risks,” said Dr. Lori Katterhagen, Chief Nursing Officer. “By adopting this initiative, we are further reinforcing our dedication to delivering high-quality care, reducing errors, and promoting a culture of safety for both our patients and staff.”
Early detection and treatment of preeclampsia can reduce the chance of severe complications. These bands will be especially helpful for patients during unplanned visits to urgent care or the emergency room—helping to ensure a patient receives the correct treatment.
“Symptoms of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy can mimic other conditions, making it challenging for healthcare providers to recognize and respond to in a timely manner,” said Melissa Wilson, Director of the Trios Birth Center. “While Trios staff are well versed and are always on the lookout for symptoms of preeclampsia, being a part of the Blue Band Initiative will make sure our patients are well taken care of wherever they receive treatment.”
